The Wilted Flower
by Bill Lindenmuth

In amongst the garden, flowers shouted out in full bloom
brilliant colors filled the air as far as the eye can see,
but in the middle of this bright color fest,
one flower stood with wilted petals with branches
and leaves that drooped to the ground.
All of the other flowers shied away from it
and the poor wilted flower wept as if it was a weed
intruding on the perfect lawn.
Days passed by with rain and sun showering down upon the garden.
The other flowers had lost their color
and their petals had fallen to color the ground beneath them,
their time had come and gone.
The wilted flower stood with leaves green
and standing tall and its petals full of brilliant color.
A young child passing by and saw the lonely
but now beautiful flower
and picked it gently from the garden.
You are the most beautiful flower
that I have ever seen, the the young child said.
And I want to share you with someone I love dearly,
all your flower friends are wrinkled
and their color has faded away.
Your beauty should be shared before you too! Look this way.
The young child held the flower ever so gently in his hand
and brought it home to her mother
who was full of sweat and looked tattered in her appearance.
The child handed the flower to her mother
and a broad smile filled her face like sunshine.
She spoke softly to her daughter as tears rolled down her cheeks.
The flower you have given me was
a message of your love, love that blooms within your heart and soul
your thoughtfulness and sweetness has planted a seed of love
that will bloom forever,
even after this wonderous beauty has become wilted
and its colors have faded away,
this flower shall live in my heart always,
as my love for you will always be there.
